Chief Petty Officer Retired William Howard “Bill” Mackey, Sr., age 88, of Old Fort, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017 at his home in the Greenlee community of McDowell County.  Bill was born in Masontown, Penn. On November 1, 1928 to the late James Murray Mackey and Daphne Cartwright Mackey.  Although he spent 26 years in the U. S. Navy and was blessed to see the world in that capacity, upon retirement he also stayed very active as an avid bass fisherman and on the golf course, among other pursuits.  Bill also worked at Shuford Furniture Co. for a time following retirement.  He was President of the Marion – McDowell Bassmasters and was a Mason in the Joppa Lodge #401 AF&AM in Old Fort as well as being a member of The Shriners.  He was very involved for more than 14 years with finding homes for exchange students visiting here from many countries.  Always quick to smile and ready with a joke, he had a loving nature and many friends.  Bill was a faithful and very active member of Greenlee Baptist Church.  A sister, Frances Allison, his brother, J. M. “Pat” Mackey, and another sister, Lena “Tootie” Shuford, preceded him in death.

Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Jeanette Wease Mackey of the home; three children, Beverly Elmore and husband Larry of Tampa, FL, Dr. Rev. James Guy Mackey and wife Sandy of Marion, and William Howard “Billy” Mackey, Jr. of Old Fort; a sister, Mary Jane Burgin of Marion; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Cory, Mathew, Amanda, Michael, Daniel and Andrew; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Greenlee Baptist Church with Rev. Jonathan Tipper, Rev. Ricky Mason and Dr. Rev. James Guy Mackey officiating.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.  Masonic Rites will be conducted following the service at the church.  Burial, with honors provide by the US Navy and Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard, will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.  Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.  Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory are encouraged to consider Hospice of McDowell County at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.   Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
