Mr. Dean Kelly Chapman, age 89, of the North Cove community of McDowell County, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at his home.  His loving family was by his side when he transitioned from this side of eternity into his eternal home.  Dean was born in McDowell County on October 26, 1927 to the late Greene C. Chapman and Ruby Carpenter Chapman.  His influence and contributions to improving the lives of the citizens of McDowell County cannot be overstated.  As a County Commissioner from 1994 to 1998, and Chairman of the McDowell County Republican Party, his leadership and inspiration were abundant and will be felt for years to come. He was a member of the Mystic Tie Masonic Lodge #237 A.F. & A.M.  He played a large part in securing the library in Old Fort for future generations to enjoy.  He was an Engineer for the B&O Railroad for 40 years and was a lifelong member of Concord United Methodist Church.  Dean possessed a great sense of humor and was affectionately known by his grandchildren as the King Pin.  His family and many friends will miss him very much.  His first wife, of 57 years, Elva Byrd Chapman, and his daughter, Sandra Kay Banks Thomas, preceded him in death.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 14 years, Reva Jean Chapman of the home; two children, Linda Chapman Harwood and William “Bill” Dean Chapman and wife Debra, all of Marion; stepchildren Rusty Dockery and wife Carolee of Idaho, Rick Dockery and wife Terrie of Claremont, Ronny Dockery of Claremont and special step-daughter Robin Dockery Abernathy and husband Mark of Hildebran; ten grandchildren, Kelly Zytynski (Joe), Wendy Leigh Chapman, Amanda Rutherford (Casey), Deanna Peters, Randall Peters, Dawn Giddings (Wayne), Scott Banks (Janice), Michelle Banks, Bradley Banks (Windy), and Jennifer Smith (Brad); eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.

A service in celebration of Dean’s life will be held on Saturday July 1, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Dr. Tom Walker and Rev. Phil Murdock officiating.  Masonic rites will be conducted following the service.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice of McDowell County at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.
