January 5, 1931 ~ July 30, 2017 (age 86)

The Piano Brothers

Mrs. Doris Creasman Guthrie Cordell, age 86, of Old Fort, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Mountain Ridge Health and Rehabilitation in Black Mountain following a period of declining health.  Doris was a native and lifelong resident of Old Fort, born on January 5, 1931 to the late Herbert Creasman and Agnes Burrell Creasman.  She was a teacher in the McDowell County School System for more than 30 years and had earned multiple post-graduate master’s degrees in Education and Supervision.

A faithful member of Old Fort Church of God, she served her Lord there as a Sunday School teacher and Choir Director.  Known throughout McDowell County for her love of music, she was a charter member and President of the Old Fort Community Chorus.  Her creative abilities were further employed in school variety shows and many other county-wide productions.  In 2010 she wrote a book, “The Church Triumphant”, which tells the history of the Old Fort Church of God and which also includes much about the history of Old Fort.  Her love for and devotion to the people of Old Fort and McDowell County was unsurpassed.  Her legacy will live on through the many ways she contributed to the betterment of her community and she will be deeply missed by all who knew this remarkable lady.

Doris leaves behind her beloved daughter, Sharon Guthrie McGee of Marion; granddaughter Emily Shirlen Roland and husband Kelly of Old Fort; great-granddaughters Lindsay and Anna Roland; stepson Chuck Cordell of Pinehurst; her special nephew Mitch Arney and wife Ann of Marion; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Her first husband, Walter Edward “Bill” Guthrie, and her second husband, Charles L. Cordell, preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by a son, Edward Raycene Guthrie, and two brothers and two sisters.

A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will be held Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Service and Cremations in Old Fort with Rev. Brenda Allison officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.  A private committal service and burial will be held prior to the service in the Moffitt Hill Cemetery.  The family requests that memorials be made to the Old Fort Community Chorus at PO Box 104, Old Fort, NC  28762.

Grateful acknowledgement is made to Mitch and Ann Arney for the faithful and loving care given to Doris over the past 25 months while she resided at Mountain Ridge.  Our thanks are also extended to the staff of Mountain Ridge and Hospice of Rutherford County for the excellent care and compassion given to Doris during her final days.
