Mr. John William Holda, age 70, of Old Fort, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at The McDowell Hospital.  John was born in Aberdeen, Maryland on August 29, 1947 to the late William J. “Bill” Holda and Florence Dinnean “Flo” Holda, both of whom were veterans of the armed forces and are interred in Arlington National Cemetery.  John also served his country faithfully in the U. Army.  He served for more than 25 years as the Director of Cardio-Pulmonary Services at The McDowell Hospital from which he eventually retired.  A faithful and active member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, John served the Lord there in many ways.  His concern for the welfare of others made his calling to the Emergency Assistance Program of the church especially important to him.  He was also very involved with the Emmaus-Forum Sunday School Class as well as the Mens Bible Study and the United Methodist Men.  He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew this gentle soul.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 27 years, Patti Smith Holda of the home; three sons, Christopher S. “Chris” Holda and wife Trish of Mount Dora, FL, Benjamin Jeffrey “BJ” Holda of Marion and Matthew Aaron Holda of Old Fort; his brother, Doug Holda and wife Kim of North Port, FL; and three grandsons, Anthony and Timothy Gonzalez and Vincent Pecorino, all of Florida.

Warren Owens officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Ladies Parlor of the church.  A committal service and inurnment with military honors will take place at a later date at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.  Memorials may be made to the Emergency Assistance Program of his church at 176 Robert Street, Marion, NC  28752.
