Mrs. Louise Ballew, age 95, of Nebo, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at her home following a brief illness.  The last surviving child of seven born to the late Robert L. Hoyle and Myrtie Barber Hoyle, Louise was born in Burke County on January 16, 1922.  Louise was a faithful member of Nebo United Methodist Church since the age of 16 and was a founding member of the United Methodist Women group there.  She was a longtime member of the Marion Garden Club and was a charter member of the Nebo Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Aside from being a homemaker, she also worked part time as a postal clerk in the Nebo Post Office, where her beloved husband of 58 years, Robert Ballew, Sr. served as the Postmaster for many years.  She was a devoted artist and craftsperson and was very skilled in oils, water colors, pottery and ceramics.  She was also prolific and talented in quilting, knitting and sewing.  Most appreciated by her friends and family, however, was her talent in preparing meals and her expertise at baking, especially her coconut cake.

She had a servant’s heart and always put the wellbeing of others ahead of her own needs.  The most important things in her life were her church, her family and her community and she remained a strong, visible part of all three.  She desired most earnestly to leave a legacy to her family as a good Christian, one who undoubtedly heard “Well done, good and faithful servant” upon entering into her eternal home.  She loved her family with complete dedication and showed unlimited interest in their lives, always concerned with their welfare.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Mace.

Louise leaves behind two children, Robert Ballew, Jr. and wife Mary Alice of Nebo and Renée Gentry of Arden; three granddaughters, Robin Culbertson and husband Chip of Black Mountain, Betty Ballew-Levy and husband Jim of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Kim Dolan and husband Michael of Morganton; three great-grandchildren, Alice Drue, David and Benjamin; and a great-great-grandson, Jason.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Nebo United Methodist Church at 117 Nebo School Road in from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.  A service in celebration of her life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church after which she will be laid to rest beside her cherished husband in the Wilson-Ballew Cemetery.  Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.  Those desiring to make a memorial contribution in her memory are encouraged to consider her church, Nebo United Methodist, at 5425 Snow Hill Road, Morganton, NC 28631.
