On March 9, 2017, Lucille Hemphill “Lou” Ledbetter passed away at the home of daughter Cassandra Kaylor and son-in-law Calvin Kaylor of Nebo, NC. “Sandi” and “Hammer” were Lou’s caregivers for the past 2 ½ years.  A native of McDowell County, Lou was born on October 11, 1927 to the late John Rodney Hemphill and Mattie Simmons Hemphill.

Lou was active in her adult life in Alexandria, Va., serving several years as President of the Mt. Vernon-Lee Women’s Club, member of the Fairfax County Culture Society, instrumental in the grand opening of the Dulles Regional Airport in Reston, Va. Upon moving back to Marion, NC in 1986, Lou was drawn to the Battered Women’s Shelter of Marion, where she held the position of Director. With her passion for helping others and her leadership, the Battered Women’s Shelter was able to purchase a larger facility to meet the community’s needs.

Lou enjoyed playing canasta, the piano and singing with her many friends and family. As a devoted mother, she was involved in all activities with her children; camping, roller skating, sports, dancing with her grandchildren and playing with her great-grandchildren.  Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Floyd Ledbetter and a son, Tim Piper.  Her beloved Chihuahua, Princess “Baby”, also preceded her in death.

Lou is survived by her son, Charles Young Ledbetter of Nebo, daughters, Cassandra “Sandi” Kaylor & son-in-law Calvin “Hammer” Kaylor of Nebo and Holly Giuffrida of Cornelius, and Cathy Dickey & son-in-law Lee Dickey of Mooresville.

Lou loved her eight grandchildren, Charles Kaylor of Morganton, Samantha Kaylor of Marion, Gabriel Kaylor of Nebo, Christina Giuffrida of Cornelius, Anthony Guiffrida of Mt. Ulla, Matthew Ledbetter of New York, and Crystal Lee & Tyler Dickey, both of Mooresville. Also surviving are her eight great grandchildren, Casey Kaylor of Nebo, Hailey, Madison and Seth Kaylor of Nebo, Haley Giuffrida of California, Reagan Kaylor of Morganton, Aiden Giuffrida of Cornelius, and Damon Laws of Mooresville.  In keeping with her wishes, her family will have a private gathering of remembrance at her home.  Memorials may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care at 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC  28690.
