Rev. Millard James “Bill” Harris, age 89, of Old Fort, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at his home following several years of declining health.  A native of McDowell County, he was born on February 18, 1928 to the late John H. Harris and Turcia Dalton Harris.  Rev. Harris served as the pastor of Glenwood Church of God for many years and was retired from Beacon Manufacturing, having worked there for 33 years.  He was a member of Living Waters Tabernacle in Old Fort.  Of the things he loved doing, working with wood brought him the most enjoyment.  Whether sawing lumber or working up firewood, his knowledge of different woods and their uses was vast.  A humble, God-fearing man, he himself summed up his reliance on the Lord when he said that through all life’s trials, what got him through it was that he stood on the Rock of Christ.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 67 years, Georgia Phillips Harris of the home; three children, Ivory Warren and husband George of Old Fort, Howard Harris and wife Barbara of Old Fort, and Ralph Harris and wife Ellie of Sugar Hill; a brother, Joe Harris of Old Fort; two sisters, Jane Whitesides and Rosa Lee Broadway, both of Old Fort; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

A service to celebrate his home going will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Living Waters Tabernacle with Rev. Kenneth Massingill and Rev. Jason Harris officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow in the Davis Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Westmoreland Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
