1SG William “Bill” S. Pilkington, Age 88, of Black Mountain, formally of Old Fort, passed away at the Charles George VA Medical Center on Thursday, November 9, 2017. Bill was born on March 22, 1929, to the late John and Victoria Pilkington of Old Fort, NC. He was the last of ten children. Bill was a loving husband for 58 years, to his late wife Lillie Mae Wilson.

Bill retired from the Army after 22 years of service. He was a tank commander who served multiple tours in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During his time in the Army Bill earned multiple awards, the Korean service medal with three devices, United Nations service medal, national defense ribbon with oak leaf cluster, Vietnam service medal with three devices, good conduct medal first thru seventh award, Army commendation medal with second award. He also earned multiple citations from the Presidential citation, Korean Presidential, and Vietnam Presidential citation. Bill was a loyal patriot that served his country well. He will be remembered for his wonderful since of humor and for the time and detail that he gave to all that he did.  Bill loved to give generously to many organizations. 

Bill is survived by five nieces, Ora Lee Kerlee and husband Jerry of Black Mountain, Joyce Turner and husband George of Shelby, Sue Young and husband Sam of Valdese, Hilda Randall and husband Bobby of Old Fort and Mary Neil Morgan of Marion. A Great-Niece, Tammy Kerlee, known as “Green Bean” to Bill, and numerous Nephews and Great Nieces.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at 2:00PM, at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC. Services will be conducted by Rev. Kenneth Rhinehart. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Carepartners Hospice and the VA Hospice.
