EARL BOYD BATES, 74 of Marion, NC, went home to be with the Lord on March 25, 2013 at Burke Hospice & Palliative Care, Valdese, NC.
Earl Bates was born June 30, 1938 in McDowell County to the late Arvel Samuel Bates and Pearlie McCall Bates.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his first wife, Norma June Watson Bates and two sons, Samuel Ray Bates and Tony Allen Bates, two brothers, James Cecil Bates and Virgil Wayne Bates.
Earl had left behind to cherish his memory of his loving wife of 27 years, MARIA LEONOR (“LEN”) BATES of Marion, 2 sisters, Margie Lee Bates Durham and husband Carl of Marion, Frances Lois Hollifield of Marion, several nephews, nieces and cousins and two special friends of the family EDDIE SMITH of Marion who gave us encouragement and has been a great help in time of our need and BRO. GARY GREENE, our pastor of Faith Missionary Baptist Church and his wife VELMA who gave us many hours of prayers and spiritual inspirations.
Earl was a lifelong employee of American Thread/Coats North America, retired after 47 years of service and worked as Maintenance Technician.
Earl was an active member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in North Cove, Marion. He is a former member of Hefner Memorial Baptist Church for 52 years saved and baptized in 1951.
Earl enjoyed traveling and he was a World Traveler. He traveled with his wife Len in Sydney, Australia, Honolulu, Hawaii and the big island of Hilo, Hawaii, Hongkong, China, Inchon and Seoul, South Korea, Tokyo and Osaka, Japan and Manila, Phillipines including the island of Bacolod and the so called Hundred Islands in the Philippines. He has flown to thirty (30) major international airports in different countries. He also traveled several states in the U.S.A,
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 29, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Gary Greene and Rev. Mark Hollifield officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in McDowell Memorial Park at 327 Memorial Park Road, Marion, N. C. 28752. Flowers are also accepted and/or memorial donations to Burke Hospice & Palliative Care at 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, N. C. 28690
