Ronald Merritt Webb, age 62, of Marion, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Asheville, N. C., with his family by his side. A native of McDowell County, Ron was born on August 26, 1944, the son of Thelma Lanning Webb and the late Swann Merritt Webb. He was preceded in death by his longtime life mate, Maxine Hoydel, of Florida and a brother Gerald Webb. Ron was a 1962 graduate of Pleasant Gardens High School and served in the US Navy from 1962 to 1965. Ron worked for years as a contractor building many homes in the Marion area before moving to Florida. While in Florida he continued his trade until being disabled by his heart condition. On July 1, 1996 Ron was the recipient of a heart transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Through the Grace of God, modern medicine and the loving gift of an organ donor, Ron was given another chance at life. During the eleven miraculous years Ron lived after the transplant he was able to impact many lives. He was a handyman for his neighbors in Florida and with a joke always at the ready, he shared many smiles and belly laughs with those he knew. Ron would spend as much time as possible with his family on extended trips to North Carolina. The most significant occurrences during the past eleven years were the opportunities he had to meet and see five grandchildren grow and to share time with them.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Thelma Lanning Webb of Pleasant Gardens; a brother Robert Webb and wife Vicki of Marion; sister-in-law, Pat Webb of Pleasant Gardens; three children, daughter, Kim Ownbey and husband Robbie of Candler, NC, son, Scott Webb and wife Shannon of Copperas Cove, TX and daughter, Jennifer Lese and husband Brian of Killeen, TX. He is also survived by the five previously mentioned grandchildren: Austin Kent, Sydney Ownbey, Carson Ownbey, Cameron Webb and Christian Webb and several nephews, nieces and friends.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 22, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Revs. Harold Webb and Dean Silver officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. An inurnment will be at McDowell Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Transplant Foundation, 701 SW 27th Ave., Suite #704, Miami 33135.

Please give thought to being an organ donor. Ron's grandchildren appreciate the unselfish love of the donor that gave them a chance to meet their Pap-Paw Florida.

I had the pleasure to come to know Ronnie when I started working with him, Gerald and Swann. We worked on many houses - and I learned a wealth of knowledge from both Ronnie and Swann, that helped me many times in life. Ronnie and I spent time working hard and having fun fishing on many lakes with many jokes and laughs. He will be missed but never forgotten.

An Irish Blessing... May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Love, Leonard Bennick

Thelma, Scott, Jennifer, Kim, and Nell, we know what great caretakers you were to Ron, but now he rests in peace with no pain. His great wit was his trade-mark and all of us admired his zest for life and love of his family. God Bless all of you at this time.

Dear Mrs. Webb, Kim, Scott, and Jennifer, I can't begin to tell you how sad I was to hear of Ron's death. My heart goes out to all of you. Ron touched so many people in so many different ways. Stephanie and I were very blessed to have shared several years with Ron and all the children. I will always remember the summers we had. God Bless the family.
