A shipmate has fallen, gone but never to be forgotten.
David William Buckner II, 60, died Friday, December 6th, 2019 at Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was born in Tiffin, Ohio on July 31, 1959 to the late David Buckner and Dolly (Dillard) Buckner, who survives. Also preceding him in death was his beloved sister, Nancy Buckner.
Dave graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School in 1978 and then began his higher education pursuits at Bowling Green State University. Always proud of his academic achievements he completed a Masters degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University in 2011, often bragging that he was one of very few who could claim to have taken college courses in five different decades.
The Boy Scouts of America played a big role in Dave’s life while growing up. First as a member of Troop 464 in Tiffin and then he became a staff member at Camp Berry near Findlay, where he ran the dining hall. He was a popular counselor who performed as a fire dancer, participated in Order of the Arrow ceremonies and was an officer in the Eagle Creek Lodge. He remained friends with many who served on the Camp Berry staff with him and they will greatly miss his quick wit, fun loving spirit and infectious laughter.
What Dave will be remembered for the most is his career in the United States Navy, where he served as a Navy Personnelman from 1987 to 2007. Deployed on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier during Operation Desert Storm, he was awarded two Kuwait Liberation Medals. Those were among many awards he earned, including the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal and the NATO Medal.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, December 15, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Service in Old Fort with Pastor Jeff Parker officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial, with military rites, will follow in Cherry Springs Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Jared Buckner, Jeremy Buckner, Jeffrey Cable, Doug Faber, David Miles, Taylor Miles, Tim White and Terry Brown.
