Dee Page Hurley

August 13, 1944 ~ April 6, 2018 (age 73)

Mrs. Dee Hurley, of Marion, was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on Friday, April 6, 2018.  A native of Cambridge, Maryland, Dee was born on August 13, 1944 to the late Evelyn Duvall and was lovingly raised by her grandparents, William “Papa” Bryan and Ida “Mama” Bryan.  Her grandmother was a major influence in Dee’s life and was the glue that held their little family together. Mama’s passing elevated Dee to the role of matriarch of her family, a role she enthusiastically embraced, and she truly was a mother to everyone.  She and her husband of 54 years, Luther Hurley, lived and raised their family in Cambridge and were members of the Cambridge Wesleyan Church. Even with the responsibilities of raising a family and being in her forties, her lifelong dream to become a Registered Nurse led her to enroll in college to pursue her dream.  She ultimately graduated with honors and worked at Easton Memorial Hospital for many years.

Later in life, she and Luther made the decision to retire to Western North Carolina and ended up in Marion.  Even though her children were mostly grown and living in different areas of the country, she continued to be the cohesive force that held her loved ones close.  Family get-togethers carried on, and Dee, the consummate hostess, loved nothing more than to cook delicious meals for her family and friends. Dee and Luther have been active members of the Marion Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, and she devoted much of her time to church activities.  She served in Children’s Church, in the Awana Program as the Cubbie’s leader, and in many other church functions. Dee had a beautiful voice that she used to bring happiness to others and glory to God.

Dee had a deep desire to serve other people, and her many acts of kindness touched countless lives over the years.  Her love for her family and friends was profound, but her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was the driving force in her life.  She lived her life in service to the Lord, presenting herself as a beautiful example of a Christian lady. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Left behind, in addition to her beloved Luther, are four children, Page Pendergrass (Stan) of Odenton, MD, Bryan Hurley (Kristen) of Kannapolis, Shelby Lunsford (Marvin) of Marion, and Megan Smit (David) of Kannapolis; seven grandchildren, Collin Cavanaugh, Chris and Cory Lunsford, Milliscent and Isabella Lunsford, and Bella Hurley, as well as a soon-to-arrive grandson, Connor Smit; and her dear father-in-law, Reese Hurley of Cambridge, MD.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 9, 2018 at Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.  A service to remember and celebrate Dee’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Paul Adelgren officiating.  Burial will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. Flowers are encouraged, or memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/.
