Ellie Self McKinney of Marion passed away peacefully on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Autumn Care of Marion. For the first time in her 93 years, Ellie will be truly home for Christmas, and will be in the presence of her dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Though her family will deeply miss her, especially at this time of year, they sincerely rejoice in knowing where she is and take comfort in the fact that she no longer suffers on this side of eternity.
Ellie was born in Mitchell County on July 21, 1926 to the late Fred B. Self and Dollie M. Self. A faithful member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church for over 60 years, her church family also mourns her passing. She was a loving and devoted mother and her family was everything to her. She raised her children well and her independent personality served her in a good way as she overcame many of the obstacles that life threw at her. Her Sunday dinners were legendary and will certainly be missed as she was an excellent cook. Ellie was retired from Baxter Healthcare. Her husband, Guy Charles McKinney, a grandson, Kelly Dean McKinney, and four brothers and a sister, preceded her in death.
Ellie leaves behind five children, Beryl McKinney (Barbara), Calvin McKinney (Brenda), Elaine Gaddy (Mack) and Reba Cheek (Ray), all of Marion, and Meleia Moody (Craig) of Golden Valley; a brother, Fred Ray Self of Charlotte; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Chapel Hill Baptist Church on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Jonathan Watson and Rev. Billy Poteat officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Monday following in the Burnette Cemetery in Mitchell County. Ellie’s family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the entire staff of Autumn Care for the loving care extended to her during her time there. Flowers are appreciated and those desiring to make a memorial contribution in her memory are encouraged to consider the “You’re Special” fund of CarePartners Hospice McDowell at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.
