Mrs. Ethel Wilson Ray, age 87, of Cordova, TN, formerly of Marion, passed away peacefully at the St. Frances Hospital in Bartlett, TN on Sunday, June 9, 2019 following a brief period of declining health. Born in Burnsville, NC on August 21, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Garrett Wilson and Betty McCurry Wilson. She was a homemaker and the wife of a dairy farmer, the late George Dewey Ray, Jr., to whom she was married for 54 years. In addition to the demands of living on a dairy farm, she embraced the role of caregiver for her two daughters, as well as many of the neighborhood children, and feeding those children and, in addition, many farm hands at times. Her meals were legendary and gratefully received. Her good heart and compassionate nature were evident in the way she supported her family members through all their endeavors. She worked for a period of time at Lowe’s Foods in Marion and retired from there as a front-end supervisor. Her love for her family and friends ran deep and she will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her two daughters, Elizabeth Ray Burns of Kure Beach, NC and Angela Ray Tomassi and husband Jim of Memphis, TN; three granddaughters, Chelsea Burns and Courtney and Caty Tomassi; a number of nieces and nephews; and her faithful canine companion, Toby.
A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will take place on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Dean Owenby officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved George. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated. Those desiring to make a memorial contribution in her memory are encouraged to consider CarePartners Hospice McDowell at 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.
