Evelyn R. Bowen, age 82, of Marion, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville. Evelyn was a native of McDowell County and was born on August 12, 1936 to the late Aaron and Sippie Ratcliff. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberly Yates, her first husband, John Thomas Undercoffer, and her second husband, William Bowen.
Evelyn was a member of Clinchfield United Methodist Church. She will be remembered as a beloved mother and for the wonderful poetry she wrote. Evelyn loved nature, and she was very interested in the study of American Indian culture and history. In Evelyn’s younger years, she was a world traveler and taught others to speak German. She was a graduate of Southern Seminary College and also earned a Jager license in Germany for hunting and conservations. Evelyn had numerous individuals that she raised and protected as they were growing up.
Surviving are her children, Kirt W. Undercoffer of Baltimore, M.D. and Heidi Cooper of Lincoln, N.E.; a sister; two brothers; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also, a special person to Evelyn, Martha Hardy.
A going away party to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, June 28, 2019 in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Following the service, Evelyn will be laid to rest with her second husband, William, at Western Carolina State Cemetery.
