Mr. Howard Moore, age 83, of Old Fort, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Mission Hospital of McDowell.  Howard was a lifelong resident of McDowell County, born on July 20, 1934, and was a son of the late Willie and Burdell Whitson Moore.  Following high school he enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he served faithfully.  Upon his return to civilian life he enrolled in Technical School to become an electrician.  He then worked for Old Fort Finishing and later Sara Lee in Morganton and Weaverville.  Howard was a man of many interests.  An avid coon hunter, he also enjoyed trout fishing, making a garden each year, and listening to Bluegrass music.  Those who knew him will remember his genuine smile and big heart for those in need.  Always ready to lend a helping hand, he could be counted on and his kind nature won him many friends.  Howard attended Living Waters Tabernacle.  His passing saddens those close to him, including his faithful canine companion, Teddy.

Howard leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley Moore, of the home; two children, Rodger Moore and wife Georgia of Marion and Marlene Smith and husband Greg of Old Fort; a brother, James Moore and wife Gail of La Mesa, CA; four grandchildren, Wendy Rose, Bridgett Owens, Emily Owens, and Brady Smith; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, March 30, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Service and Cremations in Old Fort with Rev. Keith Jamison and Rev. Kenneth Massingill officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Private interment services, with military honors conducted by the U. S. Navy, will be in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
