Howard Tipton, age 97, of Morganton, passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at his residence with his daughter and caregiver, Marlene, by his side. He was a native of Yancey County, born on October 2, 1922 to the late Henry Grady Tipton and Bernice Harris Tipton. He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Gladys Carver Tipton.
Howard enjoyed working outside around his home, whether it be mowing the grass or just working in his vegetable garden, and he did so until he was 95 years old. He was a gracious host, always wanting to feed and serve his guests. Howard served during World War II in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantry Sergeant, and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. Howard will be remembered as a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Howard is survived by his four children, Marlene Tipton Ward of the home, Ray Tipton and wife Evelyn of Marion, Grady Tipton and wife Tamera of Drexel, and Max Tipton and wife Lois of Morganton; a brother Eura Tipton and wife Juanita of Sandford, NC; six grandchildren, Donnie Tipton and wife Maureen of Marion, Leslie Austin and husband Tim of Morganton, Kelly Corum and husband Kyle of Burlington, Josh Tipton and wife Regina of Drexel, Ashley Hampton and husband Nathan of Morganton, and Alethia Avery and husband Diante of Morganton; and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Westmoreland funeral Home in Marion. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Tony Land officiating. Interment will take place in the Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery with honors provided by the United States Marine Corps.
