James G. Barrier, Jr., age 81, of Hickory passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at Shaire Center in Lenoir with his family by his side. James was a native of McDowell County and was born on December 18, 1937 to the late James Gudger Barrier, Sr. and Novella Huffman Barrier. He is preceded in death by a son, James Eugene Barrier.
James was an avid gun enthusiast. He was a member of the NRA and collected many types of guns over the years. He was employed by Tropicana for a number of years and spent the last part of his career working in textiles. James spent his free time being outside in nature and listening to music. He would take drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway to clear his mind and find new places to explore.
James was a hard worker and kind soul. He had the gentlest nature and always helped anyone in need. James was very close to his daughter and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his loved ones.
James leaves behind a daughter, Crystal Johnson of Hickory; a brother, Gene Barrier and wife Carol of Berea, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Tabitha Heavner and husband Adam, Summer Barrier Guthrie and husband Brian, and Lucas Johnson and wife Ashley; and eight great grandchildren, Graham, Carter, Blake and Riley Heavner, Isaiah Johnson, Levi Barrier, Peyton Ressler and Christopher Williams.
The family will have a private service, and James will be laid to rest in the Wilson-Ballew Cemetery.
