Mrs. Jeanette Wease Mackey, age 86, of Old Fort, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2019 at her home in the Greenlee community of McDowell County. Jeanette was born in McDowell County on March 15, 1933 to the late Cleatus Guy Wease and Jessie Ann Elliott Wease. Jeanette traveled the world with her husband of 65 years, Chief Petty Officer Retired William Howard “Bill” Mackey, as he fulfilled his duties in the U. S. Navy. She volunteered her time with the American Red Cross in Japan, wrote letters for wounded soldiers and spent many hours visiting them at hospitals overseas.
Following his retirement from the Navy, they returned to Jeanette’s hometown and settled in to happily live out the remainder of their lives. Jeanette was a very active member of Greenlee Baptist Church and was also a member of the Marion Chapter of the Eastern Star as well as the Order of the Amaranth. She also loved making crafts, decorating her home and especially going to yard sales. She made friends easily and those who were fortunate enough to know this special lady will miss her very much. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Jane Brown.
Surviving are three children, Beverly Elmore and husband Larry of Amarillo, TX, Dr. Rev. James Guy Mackey and wife Sandi of Marion and William Howard “Billy” Mackey, Jr. of Old Fort; a sister, Doris Walston and husband Tim of Old Fort; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, August 5, 2019 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Greenlee Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jonathan Tipper, Rev. Ricky Mason and Dr. Rev. James Guy Mackey officiating. A committal service will take place that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband Bill.
