Johnnie C. Byrd, age 86, of Old Fort, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Johnnie was born in Old Fort on August 11, 1933 to the late Robert “Bob” Byrd and Ellie Haynes Byrd. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and was retired from the North Carolina Wildlife Commission where he served for many years, retiring as a Superintendent.
Johnnie was a member of Landis Presbyterian Church where he served the Lord as a Sunday School Superintendent and Deacon. He was also an Elder for many years and at one time served as Ruling Elder. A gentle and humble man, Johnnie had many friends and was loved by all who knew him. His son, John Byrd, passed away before him in February of 2015.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Blackwell Byrd; his sister, Inez McPeters; a niece, Lynn Tomlinson; and four nephews, Scott, David and Darren Blackwell and Jerry McPeters..
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Dr. Sid Dyer officiating and with military rites conducted by the U. S. Army. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private interment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated, however, those desiring to make a memorial contribution in his memory are encouraged to consider his church.
