Joy was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, NC, where she met her husband, R. Truett Wilson. They were married in 1957 and recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Joy began her teaching career in Marietta, Georgia. After she married, she taught in Caldwell County, NC for one year and then moved to McDowell County, NC. After 34 years of teaching high school in the North Carolina Public School System, she transitioned to teaching part time at Foothills Industries for several years before leaving public education completely. Upon leaving Foothills Industries in 1996, she acclimated quickly to the next chapter of her life, which included golf, lunch with friends, and gardening projects with her husband. She enjoyed each phase of life to the fullest.
