On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Joy Madron Wilson, loving wife and mother of two, passed away at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville, North Carolina from a prolonged illness. Joy was born July 3, 1934 in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late Dr. Paul Madron and Mary Lee Sherwood Madron. Joy spent much of her childhood in Mountain City, TN., and Vilas, NC, living with her grandparents, Ed and Ella Sherwood and her Aunt, Anna Mae Sherwood. Joy was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, NC, where she met her husband, R. Truett Wilson. They were married in 1957 and recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Joy began her teaching career in Marietta, Georgia. After she married, she taught in Caldwell County, NC for one year and then moved to McDowell County, NC. In the McDowell County School System, she taught at Old Fort, Pleasant Gardens, and Marion High School. While at Marion School, she taught physical education and coached girls softball and basketball. In 1972, she relocated to the newly built McDowell High School, where she taught US and World History, which she was truly passionate about. Joy received a Masters Degree in Public Education from Western Carolina University in 1987. After 34 years of teaching high school in the North Carolina Public School System, she transitioned to teaching part time at Foothills Industries for several years before leaving public education completely. Upon leaving Foothills Industries in 1996, she acclimated quickly to the next chapter of her life, which included golf, lunch with friends, and gardening projects with her husband. She enjoyed each phase of life to the fullest.
Joy was an active member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church for 60 years. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school, and prior to her illness, rarely missed a Sunday service. Among the many trips she took throughout her life was a trip to Noah’s Ark in Williamstown, Kentucky, where she said she felt God’s presence while inside the Ark.
