Joyce (Gouge) Brooks

February 5, 1940 ~ January 29, 2018 (age 77)

Joyce Brooks, age 77, of Marion, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 at Willow Ridge Rehabilitation and Care in Rutherford County following a period of declining health.  A native of Marion, Joyce was born on February 5, 1940 to the late Dallas Gouge and Lillian Haynes Gouge.  She was a homemaker, but more than that, she was a caregiver who selflessly took care of those in need.  With a servant’s heart, she not only served her fellow man but more importantly she served the Lord.  She always had a smile and laughed often and those who came in contact with her knew instinctively that she had love in her heart.  Joyce served on a mission trip to Haiti and loved Gospel Music and was also an accomplished guitar player and singer.  In addition to her parents, her husbands, Gary Hoppes, Rev. Harold O’Dear and Bobby Brooks, and her brother, Warren Welzie Gouge, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her son, Gary G. Hoppes, Jr. of Nebo; two brothers, Linzy Robert Gouge and John Beard Gouge, both of Marion; and two sisters, Anna Sue Reese and Mary Ellen Burnette, both of Nebo.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at McDowell Memorial Park with Rev. Jimmy Reese officiating after which she will be laid to rest beside Gary.  The family will meet for a Memorial Service and time of fellowship at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church immediately following the graveside service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County at PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
