Major Roger Gary Danio, US Army Retired, 73, passed away peacefully at his family home in Folly Beach, South Carolina on May 16th, 2013.  He is survived by his wife, Sandi A. Danio, and their six children and step-children: Mitzi, Eric, Shelly, Crystal, Victor and Gina, a brother Randy and sister-in-law Bonnie Danio, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  He was born in Springfield, Mass on April 7, 1940 to Herb and Monica Danio, now deceased.

Major Danio was commissioned by the US Army as an officer in 1966 and was also a 32nd Degree Mason in both the Scottish Rite and the Templar Knights.  As a member of the 110th Infantry, he served 27 years active military, which took him on three tours of Vietnam, as well as appointments in Hawaii, Lebanon, Alaska and North Carolina.  While in Vietnam, Major Danio was gave selflessly in defense of the nation and was honored as such by receiving a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  Among his other military accomplishments, Major Danio served as a Special Forces Master Parachutist and made over 100 mission-based jumps from the helicopters and he also piloted.  He continued to serve this nation with 17 years reserve duty.  Major Danio taught J-ROTC at both Farrington High School in Honolulu and Avery County High School in Newland until his retirement from education in 2000.  He has dual Masters degrees in Public Administration and Sociology from The University of Alaska, having graduated with honors.

Major and Mrs. Danio enjoyed countless community and hobbyist activities together, including The Military Order of the Purple Heart, Beech Mountain Volunteer Firefighers, Wounded Warrior Project, Maryland HAM Radio Club, Highland Games and Jimmy Huega Foundation Volunteers and the VFW. 

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion, NC.  The services begin at 10am on May 21st at the Black Mountain State Veterans Cemetery Chapel with military honors, followed by the burial. Memorial gifts can be sent in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project and cards can be sent to Sandi Danio, Po Box 1602 Folly Beach SC 29439.
