Mary Jane Mackey Burgin, age 91, of Old Fort, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019. Mary Jane was born in Masontown, PA on December 6, 1927 to the late Daphne and Murray Mackey. She touched many lives around the world during her long life and had a special place in her heart for young people. This was evidenced by the commitment she made taking in and caring for foreign exchange students. She loved them like family and they returned the love to her. Her other interests were many and varied from fishing, playing the organ, knitting and crocheting to following the Atlanta Braves and the Carolina Tarheels. She also loved puttering in her garden and she was an amazing cook. Mary Jane loved her family dearly, which included her pup Lily, and all who knew her will miss her very much. She was a member of Siloam Presbyterian Church. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Edward Jones “Eddie” Burgin III; a son, Edward Jones Burgin IV; a grandson, Jason Foster; two brothers, Bill Mackey and Pat Mackey; and two sisters, Tootie Shuford and Frances Deutsch.
Surviving are three children, Sarah Hagood and husband Michael of Elizabeth City, Ronald Greenlee Burgin of Marion and William Edward Burgin and wife Linda Doyle Burgin of Fletcher; three grandchildren, Eric Foster and wife Anne of Avery County, Craig Burgin and wife Erin of Henderson County and Dr. Amanda Burgin of Durham; and four great-grandchildren, Blake Foster, and Gavin, Mason and Abby Burgin..
A service of remembrance will take place Monday, April 29, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. James Mackey officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private burial will be held at a later date at the Ebenezer- Siloam Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Eddie.
