Mrs. Matilda Burleson Young McKinney, age 103, of Marion, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center in Black Mountain. Born in Yancey County on September 6, 1916, Matilda was a daughter of the late John and Pearl Thomas Burleson. Her children were raised to know right from wrong and she always made sure they had everything they needed to stay well fed and clothed. She was a long time member of West Court Baptist Church and volunteered her time at the Christian Clothes Closet. In her free time she enjoyed quilting and making a garden. Her first husband, Bart William Young, and her second husband Harlow Robert McKinney, both preceded her in death as well as a two brothers, Hobert and Sam Burleson, and her sister, Mae Boone.
Surviving are two children, Dean Young and wife Sharon, and Marjorie Canipe and husband James, all of Marion; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will take place Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Jimmy Buchanan officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Harlow.
