Otto M. Gross, Sr., 92 years of age, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, in Marion. Mr. Gross was a resident of the Woodlawn Community.


Mr. Gross was preceded in death by his parents, Morton and Rebecca Gross, daughter Amelia “Amy” Ann Gross and brother Gus Gross. His loving wife of 55 years, Magleen Hollifield Gross, also preceded him in death.


Left to cherish his memory are son, O. Merwin Gross, Jr., grand-daughter Heather Jane Byrd and (mother Carolyn Gross), great-grandsons, Gabe and Eden Byrd, along with his loving companion of 15 years, Mary Wagner. There are numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews left to mourn his passing.


A Navy Veteran, Otta graduated from East State University and spent his teaching career in McDowell County. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Spruce Pine and hobbies included amateur radio operations as well as fishing and was avid playing the fiddle, challenging himself with puzzles and was a skilled storyteller.


A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Concord Methodist Church in the Ashford Community at 4:00 PM with Rev. Dean Owenby officiating.  A committal service will follow the memorial service at the church with Masonic rites by Vesper Lodge #554 and military honor by the U.S. Navy. Friends will be received prior to the service, between 3:00 and 4:00 PM. Graveside services will be private.
