Mrs. Peggy Church Hensley, age 81, of Marion, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2019 at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville following several years of declining health. Peggy was born in Valdese on August 19, 1937 to the late Odell Church and Irene Abee Church. Early in her work life she was employed at Old Fort Finishing and after earning her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate she worked at Broughton Hospital in Morganton. Her free time was devoted to her family and she loved to cook and care for them, especially making sweet potatoes and banana pudding for her grandchildren. She loved travelling with her husband Bill, and she particularly enjoyed taking cruises. Peggy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. A sister, Carolyn Stacy, her brother, Sonny Church, and another sister, Geraldine Church, preceded her in death.
Peggy leaves behind her loving husband of 58 years, Billy Hensley; three children, Sherry Rose and husband Paul of Morganton, Perry Hensley and wife Michel of Lenoir and Keith Hensley and wife Patti of Boone; four sisters, Doris Autrey of Richmond, VA, Joanne Cheek of Nebo, Marlene Rumfelt of Glenwood and Patricia Turner of Spartanburg; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and her little old dog, Sissy.
A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Dr. Terry Cheek and Rev. Steve Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park. Acting as pallbearers are Todd Stacy, Randy Freeman, Billy A. Hensley, Toby Hartsell, Aaron Willis and Len Farthing. Honorary pallbearers are Tim Cheek and Chris Rumfelt.
