Mr. Wade H. Adkins, age 78, of the Sugar Hill community, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.  Wade was born in Yancey County on August 14, 1940 to the late Eulas and Bessie Wheeler Adkins.  He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War and in addition to other honors was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious service in a battle zone.  A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Wade was known for his loving and giving nature.  He was retired from Estes Trucking Co. and was a member of Sugar Hill Baptist Church.

 

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Judy Greene Adkins of the home; two daughters, Tonya Adkins McElveen of Asheville and Darla Adkins Robinson of Marion; three brothers, Wayne Adkins of Forest City, Harold Lee Adkins of Louisiana, and David Adkins of Forest City; a sister, Wanda Phipps and husband Bruce of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Erin, Kyle, Emily, Saige and Dara; and a great-grandson, Raiden.

 

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Sugar Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Robinson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Burial, with military honors, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.  Flowers are appreciated, however, memorials may be made to the Manna Food Bank at https://donate.mannafoodbank.org/.
