Betty Joyce Dennis Stone, 87, of Old Fort, passed into Heaven surrounded by her family with prayers and songs on Easter Sunday April 4, 2021, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville after a brief illness. The daughter of Henry Claymon Dennis and Louise Barnes Dennis, she was born on July 16, 1933, in Rowan County, North Carolina, graduated from Old Fort High in 1951, and King’s Business School in 1953. In addition to homemaker, her careers included work with one of the Army contractors completing the National Military Command Center in Pennsylvania.
After living throughout the United States and Europe as a career Army wife, she came back to Old Fort and helped build her forever home. Keeping up with professional sports teams was one of her ways of staying connected with her sons. Her home was adorned with her crafts, especially at the holidays, but her favorite place was working in her yard on anything green and flowering. After working briefly as a substitute teacher at Old Fort Elementary School, she went to work for Collins & Aikman in the engineering department. After her retirement, she was a volunteer tutor for two years with the Champs program at Grace Community Church where she worshipped Jesus. Special friends and caretakers Janet and Don White made it possible for her to live at home until her recent hospitalization.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brothers Alton, Lloyd, and Carl Dennis, sisters Helen Trexler and Irma Hunt, and grandsons Travis and Josh Stone.
She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Jo Venable (Richard), three sons Jeff (Janice), Jerry (Melanie), and John (Kelly) Stone; two granddaughters Ashley Roberts (Sam) and Rosie Schifano (Bryan Dewulf), and five grandsons Adam (Lisa) and Eric (Jennifer) Venable, Nick and Griffin Stone, and Wesley Kennedy (Jackie Hollington); and nine great-grandchildren Evie, Noah, Lalie, Henry, Eli, Lucy, and Jacob Venable, and Huck and Fynn Hollington.
