Charles “Homer” Owensby, of Marion, passed away at the age of 80, at Mission Hospital – Memorial Campus in Asheville, NC, on Sunday, February 21, 2021. A native of McDowell, Homer was born on May 22, 1940 to the late Andrew Owensby and Mallie Styles Owensby. Homer served with valor in the United States Marine Corps for 6 years and though his service, he got to travel the world. He retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture after working 40 years for the company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching football and NASCAR. He also liked to listen to old Country music and was a history buff. Homer liked to go antiquing and relaxing in his rocking chair on the porch. He was known for his sense of humor and his joke telling. He never met a stranger and made numerous friends being sweet hearted and his generosity. Spending time with his family, especially his grandson Malachi, brought him the most joy in his life.
Homer is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Justice Owensby and a son Charles Andrew Owensby.
Surviving Homer is his daughter, Frances Owensby of Marion; brother, Alden Owensby (Trena) of Weaverville; sister, Evelyn Minish of Marion; grandson, Malachi Owensby, and many special friends, nephews, nieces and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Webb officiating. The family will receive friends following the visitation. Homer will be laid to rest beside his wife Mary at Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family at P.O Box 247, Marion, NC, 28752
