Donald Eli Finley, Sr., age 92, of Marion, NC passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville, NC.
Mr. Finley was born January 9, 1929 in Buncombe County, NC to the late Jabez Finley and Nan Rose Sigmon Finley. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 14 and was an honorable soldier and faithful patriot to his country having served on the beaches of Normandy. After his service, he worked for Triangle Heating and Air until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion, REACT, Rescue Squad and EMS. He was a lifetime member and Fellow of the Marion Mooselodge. In Mr. Finley’s spare time he enjoyed golf, NASCAR, old cars, fishing and his pride and joy was cooking for his family.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hazel Mae McCracken Finley and his son, Donald E. Finley, Jr.
Those left behind to cherish Mr. Finley’s memory are four children, Carol Finley Jennings (Omar “Mansel”), Belinda Finley Hollifield (Ron), Debra Finley and John F. Finley all of Marion, NC; six grandchildren, Dusty Finley, Destiny Finley, Brandi Finley, Donald “Jamie” Adkins, Derrick Walls and Casey Finley; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Aubrey Adkins; and special friends and neighbors, Robert and Viola Loftis
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 8, 2021 in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion, NC. A funeral service to celebrate Mr. Finley’s life will follow at 3:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. J.B. Cope and Mansel Jennings officiating. Military honors will be held at the funeral home following the service. Burial will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
