Ernest Johnson, age 89, of Marion, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 24, 2020 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. A native of McDowell County, he was born on April 17, 1931 to the late John David Johnson and Eva Shuford Johnson. His talents were many and he worked hard at many different jobs. He was a skilled carpenter and homebuilder, a talented timberman and could handle any type of equipment from small handtools to tractor trailers. As a devoted Christian he served his Lord in many ways including as Chairman of the Deacon Board at Rolands Chapel Baptist Church where he attended for many years. Later in life he moved his membership to Cross Mill Church of God. A more loving husband, father and grandfather could not be found and his family and friends will miss him very much. His wife of 51 years, Estelle Haney Johnson, preceded him in death in 1999. He was also predeceased by two sons, Terry Allen Johnson and Sherman Lee Johnson.
Surviving are three children, Jewel Suttle and husband Harold, J.D. Johnson and Dennis Ray Johnson. There are fifteen grandchildren and a multitude of great- and great-great-grandchildren surviving.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 27, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Gary Greene officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved Estelle.
