During the early evening hours of Wednesday, April 28, 2021, Mr. Joseph N. Greenlee, age 77 of Spruce Pine, sent his final radio call while surrounded by his loving family during his stay at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville. The son of the late James Edward Greenlee and Janie Hoffman Greenlee, he was born in Montgomery, West Virginia on May 26, 1943.
A career radio telegraph operator, Joseph worked on cargo ships, ensuring travel for shipments went smoothly and safely. He worked in this field from 1977 until his retirement in 2005. Joseph was also a proud veteran of the United States Airforce. He was also a private pilot from 1971 until 2000. He Loved radios and was even a Ham radio operator from the age of 16 up until 2016. Most of all, Joseph was devoted to his family whom he loved very much. He made many friends throughout his life from many different places and made fond memories with everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who had the chance to know him.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his grandparents, Norton and Dora Hoffman.
Left to cherish his precious memories are his devoted wife of forty-eight years, Deborah Greenlee, of the home; his beloved daughter, Cheryl Wyatt, of Spruce Pine, and four precious grandchildren, Payton, Sophia and Hannah of Boiling Springs SC, and Avigail of Spruce Pine.
A memorial service to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held on the Blue Ridge Parkway later in the summer. The date, time and location will be announced once it has been confirmed.
