Mrs. Mary Sumlin Childers, age 85, of Marion, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Deer Park Health and Rehabilitation following a period of declining health. Mary was born in Marion on January 19, 1934 to the late Rufus and Edna Washburn Sumlin. Her husband, Jack Childers, preceded her in death. Mary was a proud graduate of Glenwood High School and had the honor of being chosen as one of the Valedictorians of her graduating class. A homemaker, she nurtured her children as they grew up and made lives for themselves. Mary had many interests but her passion was going fishing, a pastime she and Jack thoroughly enjoyed. She was also a long time member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church. Mary was much-loved and will be missed very much by all who knew her.
She leaves behind two children, a son, Randy Childers and wife Crystal and her daughter, Lisa Davis, all of Marion; a brother, James Everette Sumlin and wife Frances of Dysartsville; a sister, Shirley Sorrells and husband Raymond of Forest City; seven grandchildren, Jason Childers and wife Tiffany, Stephanie Childers, Tristan Davis and wife Kalisa, Ashton Davis, Jon Foster, and Samantha and Nathan Millwood; two great-grandchildren, Avery Childers and Bryson Davis; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Childers and Betty Sumlin; a brother-in-law, Roger Childers and wife Patsy; and a very special friend, Margaret Bowman. Mary was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby S. Rhom, Janie S. Burnette, Gladys S. Patterson and Eula Sumlin; and three brothers, Jay Sumlin, Willie Sumlin and R. E. Sumlin.
A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion with Mr. Jimmy Buckner speaking. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in McDowell Memorial Park where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved Jack. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.
