Obituary

Mary Louise Poor, age 97, passed away peacefully with family on February 1, 2021 at Rose Hill Retirement Home in Marion, NC. Mary, daughter of Harry and Laura Nigro, sister of Marguerite Flanigan and Anne Brown, was a professional flutist, and teacher in the U.S. and internationally. She was the author of “Guide to Flute Teaching”, published in 1978. She retired from full-time teaching in Naperville, IL, and moved to Jackson, TN in 1999, becoming an Adjunct Professor of Flute at Union University, and privately teaching from home. She was a strong supporter of the Jackson Symphony and the Jackson Youth Orchestra. Mary was an inspiration to all musicians, amateur to professional. Mary was extremely devoted to her dogs and had a soft spot for rescues. She lived the last of her years in Marion, NC with her daughter. She is survived by five children, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, sister and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
