Roland was a cousin of mine who I regret I only met once at The Lucky Otter in 2011. We were related on my mother's side of the family. Why we never got together in the past is unknown to me. What I can say is the time we did meet at the Lucky Otter was very special. I went with my husband and daughter, Roland was making Pumpkin Soup but quickly came out of the kitchen to greet us. We had such a sweet time with him. He was gracious, kind, loving and welcoming. We talked about how our families were related and how we should get together in the future. Before we knew it, we felt like we had known each other a long time. We were so saddened when we heard of his passing and truly regret not making the time to visit him again and meet the family. To Paige and your boys we send our deepest sympathy and love. From the short time we spent with him, we could tell he was a very special man and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Roland became my son Rob White's friend 20 years ago at Georgia State. He both helped Rob with fieldwork for his master's degree and participated in Rob's wedding. Proud to have known Roland, when he moved to Boone we considered it our loss and North Carolina's rich gain. Heartfelt sympathy to all his family from the White family in Atlanta.

Roland and I met when I was in graduate school and he was an undergrad Geology student at Georgia State University. As with everyone else, his joie de vie was infectious, and I was naturally drawn to him. I asked him to help me with my fieldwork for my graduate project, to which he warmly agreed. We camped in the Hanging Dog campground near Murphy, NC. In fact, I camped with Roland on several occasions, each of them just as much fun as the other. In the years after school, Roland and I only corresponded by email once or twice. I can only assume that he immersed himself in his family life just as I had done in mine. I am saddened to hear of Roland's untimely passing. He was one of those people you meet along life's way that you never forget. I'm only sorry that I didn't get to spend more time with him. I suspect a large part of him can be seen in his boys whom I've never met. I hope his boys' grief over the loss of their father will pass quickly enough. I will always smile when I think about Roland because I could never be around him without smiling most of the time, if not laughing outright. Roland certainly looked for the good in life and enjoyed his short time here as much as possible. I will miss him.

Deepest sympathy to all who knew and loved Roland. Thank you Roland for the kindness and generosity you showed our daughter when she began working for you in Asheville. It was comforting to know she had someone to turn to if she needed help with her car or advise about life in general. Rest in Peace

Roland was a ray of sunshine that lit our days in the most vibrant way....always a smile, and oh that laugh (can never forget it) could lift any soul and reverberate beyond the confines of any room, full of joy, kindness and humanity....Sewanee will never be the same without him....a star has burnt out above that beautiful piece of glittering Tennessee sky - he is forever in the memory all of us who knew him in that treasured place he called home and which is/was an adopted home for so many of us who shared years with him at university....forever in our hearts...warmest heartfelt condolences and love to all Roland's family....

I am so sorry to learn about Roland passing. I started going into Lucky Otter back in 2003 when I worked in West Asheville. I remember he was in the restaurant most days for years. He always had a good sense of humor and was an incredible businessman. He will truly be missed. My sympathy to the family.

What can be said when a star that shined as bright as Roland's is darkened too soon? I'm sorry doesn't begin to cover it. Roland was the first person in the restaurant industry to tell me I had a "gift" and to not waste it! For that and so many other amazing things I am forever grateful.

Such a perfect obituary to describe an incredible human being with an infectious laugh. He always had words of wisdom to share, was such a gentleman in his manners, and we shared a passion for our hometeam...the Tennessee Vols...even though he would be too upset to watch the game usually. I will never forget you Roland and how kind and thoughtful you were and what a helluva party you could throw!
