Retired hairdresser, Shirley Grace Morris passed peacefully in her home on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the age of 95.
The oldest of four, Shirley was born near Detroit, Michigan in 1925 to the late Charles Cates and Grace Allen Pettinger. She married the love of her life, Wayne, in 1954. Long time attendees of Glenwood Baptist Church, they faithfully served those in need. Shirley taught women’s Bible study, volunteered cutting hair for children with special needs, delivered Meals on Wheels, and ministered to many who had lost loved ones. Shirley had a fun-loving personality. She enjoyed roller skating, water skiing, and dancing. Shirley was a mother figure to many and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne Morris and two brothers, Albert and Roger Cates.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Marilyn Welz; nieces, Desiree Cates McKinney, Linda Effie, Glenda Fish, Sandi Carter Gless, Barbara Jandu, Cheryl Carter Moore, Margaret Stewart Todd, and Mary Stewart Tucilla; nephews, David Cates and Dale Carter; great-nephews, Casey Penley, Ian Boles, Orion Jandu, and Solen Jandu; and great-nieces, Cayla Cates and Logan Cates.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Glenwood Baptist Church. A funeral service to celebrate Shirley’s life will follow at 4:00 pm at the church with Dr. Dennis Love and Pastor Tim Earwood officiating. Interment will follow the service at Glenwood Cemetery. Those serving as pallbearers will be: Jason Patterson, Joe Head, Mike Kilpatrick, Olen McKinney, Casey Penley, Chad Brewer and Mitchell Kilpatrick.
