William Joseph Kinney, age 81, of Marion, NC formerly of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville, NC.
Mr. Kinney was born March 31, 1939 in Beaver Falls, PA to the late William Willis Kinney and Esther Jean Brew Kinney. He graduated from St. James High School in Chester, PA in 1957 and attended Villanova University 1968-1974. He was a Vietnam era veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Croaker and USS Nautilus and received the National Defense Service Medal. He was the former Commander of American Legion Post 951 and was a member of “The Forty and Eight” Local 518 in Pennsylvania.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his son, John Kinney; his sister, Judith Hillman; and his brother, Michael Kinney.
Those left behind to cherish Mr. Kinney's memory are his daughter, Mary F. Hampton (Mark); two grandsons, Andrew M. Marsh and Nathan W. Marsh; one great-grandson, Kaloyan Marsh; his sister, Margaret Jean Gruber; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion, NC. A graveside service to celebrate Mr. Kinney's life will follow at 2:00 pm at McDowell Memorial Park with military honors provided by the United States Navy.
